One walkable street holds more Michelin stars per capita than any town on the planet — and at dawn, the balloons lift off just north of it. Yountville is where the valley goes when it wants to celebrate.
The vibe
Tiny, manicured, and food-obsessed. Washington Street runs the length of town past ivy-covered restaurants, tasting salons, and the shops of V Marketplace in an 1870 stone winery building. Everything is a stroll; nothing is rushed. Mornings belong to the hot-air balloons — launches lift before 7am from just outside town, and watching them drift over the vineyards with a coffee is free front-row theater.
The dining constellation
The anchor is Thomas Keller's three-star The French Laundry — book months out, or console yourself brilliantly at his Bouchon (classic French bistro, dog-friendly patio) and Ad Hoc (family-style; Monday fried chicken is a local religion). Bistro Jeanty does Champagne-region comfort, and Mustards Grill, the original wine-country roadhouse since 1983, sits just north. Reserve everything; lunch at the starred rooms costs dramatically less than dinner.
Tasting in and around town
In town, Domaine Chandon — Moët's first American sparkling house — pours bubbles in garden lounges you can walk to, and Cliff Lede mixes rock-and-roll vineyard blocks with an art gallery. Ten minutes east, the Stags Leap District lines up Stag's Leap Wine Cellars (the 1976 Paris champion), Shafer, Clos Du Val, Chimney Rock, Pine Ridge, and Silverado. Pick three in the directory or let the sommelier order them so lunch lands back on Washington Street.
With your dog
A Michelin lunch with your dog is genuinely possible here — Bouchon and Bistro Jeanty both seat leashed dogs on their patios, and the paved Vine Trail passes the edge of town for the morning walk. Details in the dog-friendly guide.
Staying here
